30 July 2000
I am, for all intents and purposes, a big game player. When it matters, I rise
to the occasion. The converse of this is that sometimes I slack off when it
doesn't matter. But that's OK, right? Because it doesn't matter. If I were
a football player, I'd be the guy who the QB threw to on fourth and long, not
the guy who kicks the meaningless field goal to cover the spread. Well, before
I find too many sports metaphors, I'll just say that thing went well today
(well, yesterday, seeing as how it's post-midnight).
The reason that I didn't post anything for a while was due to my superstition surrounding the GMAT. I'm a big fan of superstition, although I prefer to call it ritual. See, from an anthropological perspective, ritual is important, and so when things really matter, I resort to rituals, even invented ones, to see my way to the other side. This morning, I woke up late, showered (a daily ritual not just for special occasions), and got dressed in a shirt from my undergrad days, thereby channeling the combined knowledge of those who I knew from school (It was my Haus shirt for those in the know), and my Thailand shorts which followed me to the other side of the world and back. Breakfast was an orange (Chinese good luck, I've been told), and spring water (thousands of years to bubble up from the depths). Anyway, it all worked, and I did well, and now I can go on to worry about other aspects of this whole MBA application thing, like getting my essays in order. I may actually let you avid readers check them out--we'll see.

No I'm not dead. I'm just maintaining radio silence for superstitious
reasons. Intermittent updates will resume 30 July.
16 July 2000
Well, time goes by, and not much goes on. Or rather, nothing worth noting.
Just doing boring application stuff (not boring to me, boring to the world).
Otherwise, nothing of note. I now officially have less than a year left in
Ohio, which is good I think. I believe I'm a better person when I'm not in
Ohio, though the reasons for that are somewhat mysterious to me. Feel free
to make up your own, as I'm not going to go into them here.

I will refrain from the urge to write anything about the balkanization of
indie-rock webloggers. If you don't know, it's not worth your time to find
out. It doesn't matter to me, since I'm not much of a content provider. This
site lack the balls-to-the-wall personal disclosure of some sites (e.g.
entropy, which is well done,
I think, in that it's the site I would've had a few years ago if I was prone
to spill my guts), and this site also lacks the commentary on goings on around
the web. So essentially I write for a small audience of people who generally
know me, or see some smart-ass comment I wrote on a message board and want
to know more. I rather like my rather ho-hum book report website, as I
feel no pressure to improve upon it, and it begs only for as much attention
as I give it.
In other news, I'll be trading wry comments at the Comet with other members of a "cyber-community" this Sunday, as soon as I figure out how to get there.
04 July 2000
The weekend passed about like I expected it. I did some stuff. Some of it
was fun. Not much was monumental except I got lots of time off from work, so
it was in reality a four and-a-half day weekend. Friday I rented Three
Kings and thought it was pretty good. Saturday I got all jazzed
up to go to Columbus to look at expensive stereo equipment that I didn't buy
(thankfully), and shop for CDs--which I did buy, including The Breeder's
Last Splash for $3! Now who was exulting the bargain bins of
used CD stores, recently? Oh yeah, it was him. And in true geek fashion, he helped me out on Saturday by
emailing my phone with the address
of sushi restaurant in Columbus so I could scratch an itch. Of course, the
plans to see Kleenex Girl Wonder stalled when they didn't show up for the
gig, and I was much disappointed as I sped home from Columbus way too late at
night. I recovered on Sunday by doing not much of anything except driving
around with friends looking for something to do while wondering why everything
was closed since I didn't have to work on Monday. Monday was
BBQ day, and I was reminded how much I love grilling and why it's probably a
good thing that I don't have easy access to one. Today I saw the obligatory
The Patriot, which was fine except for the white-trash comments
from my neighbors. Top if off with a minor league baseball game with the
local team and some fireworks,
and that'sthe weekend. Oh well, rather ho-hum, but that's fine, since there's
only 3 days until next weekend.
